This unique piece was hand-turned from a large section of English ash, which is opened-grained, making it perfect for charring - helping to reveal the natural characteristics of the wood by keeping the grain visable. Even before turning, this piece had several splits forming along the end grain. Rather than trying to hide them, a decision was made to burn the wood to further expose the cracks. Finished with an ancient Japanese technique called Yakisugi on both the interior and exterior, which involves using a 2000 degree flame to cause instant charring on the surface of the wood, before it is removed with an abrasive to reveal the grain hidden underneath. Perfect as a centrepiece or as decor around the home.

Finished with tung oil to enhance the beauty of the wood. Please refer to the ‘Product Care’ section located at the top of the page or on the homepage if you have any concerns about tung oil and nut allergies.

This bowl measures 28cm wide, 10cm tall and 9cm deep.
