Hand turned from a highly patterned wood to create a large vessel. This bowl is relatively light in the hand and smooth to the touch. Featuring a unique grain and spalted pattern throughout the piece, a result of the wood being left on its side for several years and growing a specific type of fungus. This vessel has a very striking look, with a lightly warped shape - a result of turning the wood somewhat thin whilst wet and allowing it to dry and warp, giving it a natural look . Finished with a hard wax oil with a white dye mixed in to keep the natural pale colour of beech, and to highlight the beauty of the grain and improve durability. This large vessel measures 24cm wide, 16cm tall, and 15.5cm deep. Perfect for use as a centrepiece or as home decor.
Patterned English beech, locally sourced from well managed sustainable woodlands found in a small village in Devon. Beech is a stunning light brown coloured wood with hints of orange. The wavy black lines and patterns are formed when a beech tree is felled and left on its side to grow a particular type of fungus that runs throughout the wood. This is what creates the visually stunning markings found on this piece. With a straight, closed grain, giving it a strong surface, beech is often used for kitchen utensils and cabinetry - giving it a permanent place in my workshop.
